One of the things I have always loved about my job is that the industries we work in – healthcare, real estate, higher education, clean energy and others – are filled with creative, innovative and adaptable leaders. These are people who understand that their fields move fast and that staying competitive requires them to look to the future rather than remain mired in the way things have always been done.

The Denterlein team, journalists and journalism students at Northeastern University were honored to hear from Boston Globe Editor Nancy Barnes on Nov. 19 for the third annual Jack Thomas Lecture. The realities and challenges of leading a newsroom in the chaotic information world we find ourselves now living in, and what the next generation of reporters will need to succeed in finding and presenting the truth, were key themes, as we’ll explore further below.

What makes a shared space like a park or waterfront more than just patches of green and blue in our communities? It’s the stories we tell about them, the connections we foster within them, and the actions we inspire to protect and invigorate them.

Climate scientists have laid out a clear roadmap of how to solve the climate crisis - stop burning fossil fuels, eat less meat, and protect forests. Our challenge is now how to implement those solutions and build public support for a speedy transition to a more sustainable world.
