At team Denterlein, we take great joy in our work – elevating the great work of interesting people, organizations and movements. This year, it felt especially meaningful to reflect on our clients’ biggest successes of the year and a little about our own favorite memories of the year as well. - Helping brands connect in new ways: New England’s major cultural, open space, healthcare and education institutions do great things – and we love finding new ways to promote them. Mount Auburn Cemetery welcomed thousands of visitors this month for its “Celebrating SOLSTICE” The National Park Service kicked off a 250-day countdown to the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War Battle of Bunker Hill. The Friends of the Public Garden got wonderful exposure for their “succession plan” to keep 1,700 urban trees healthy. Beth Israel Lahey Health launched an innovative partnership with GreenRoots Teaching Kitchen in Chelsea. And the Boston Athenaeum's exhibition of vintage images of Boston’s leading Black and white abolitionists of the 1860s, the Harriet Hayden “Framing Freedom” event, earned broadcast, print, magazine, and podcast coverage.
- Cutting ribbons: Developer Samuels and Associates and architects Elkus Manfredi won well-deserved plaudits for opening the first new air-rights project in Boston in 40 years. Jewish Vocational Service Boston and Quincy College opened ArLab, a state-of-the-art life sciences training facility, connecting hundreds of JVS clients and Quincy College students with good jobs. JVS’s inspiring work also led philanthropist MacKenzie Scott to a $7 million gift, the largest donation in the agency’s history!
- Habitat housewarming: Boston welcomed North America’s first-ever “Living Seawalls” installations winning front-page coverage in The Boston Globe, an in-depth report on WBUR, and lots of local television coverage.
- Busy on campus: It was another very active year for all our higher education team, including celebrating the groundbreaking for the Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology in Nubian Square, Roxbury, introducing new Emmanuel College president Beth Ross, showcasing Endicott College’s and FC Tech’s growing success placing graduates in hot jobs, and promoting Bridgewater State University’s cutting-edge Cyber Range and its success in helping businesses and organizations of all kinds protect themselves against online malefactors, hackers, and ransomware threats.
- A trend we didn’t just publicize--but we were part of: While the Boston Business Journal reported on data from JLL showing that the city’s office vacancy rate had dropped, Denterlein expanded our lease at our 3 Post Office Square to foster team building and info sharing among our growing staff.
- Who says numbers are boring? The Boston Athletic Association joined with Meet Boston on a report showing that the 2024 Boston Marathon drove $500 million in economic, big news that got splashed in The Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, the Boston Business Journal, com, WCVB News Center 5, GBH, WBUR, the Associated Press, and, Bloomberg. And in Texas, Texas Medical Center earned visibility for its major venture capital investments in start up health businesses and the creation of Helix Park to spur innovation.
- Getting social: The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Business Improvement District drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to its “ARTbeat of the Greenway” campaign through a comprehensive strategy of ads on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok, as well as native content on Instagram and Tik Tok.
- Celebrations: Boston’s now-43-mile Harborwalk celebrates its 40th anniversary, and Boston Harbor Now CEO Kathy Abbott joined Boston’s Chief Climate Officer to share a vision for the future in The Boston Globe and celebrate Harborwalk advocate, Vivien Li, with the Onboard Award.
- Our own launch! Denterlein launched an updated Public Affairs Practice in June, led by Senior Vice President Katherine Adam, putting an official name and formal structure around something that’s been core to our business since Geri Denterlein founded it 24 years ago. We were honored to welcome new MassPort CEO Richard A. Davey Jr., as our “In the News” guest in October.
- Speaking of Geri: Did you see her op-ed in the Boston Business Journal in June with compelling strategies to keep brilliant young people here in Boston as contributors and leaders after they graduate from our fine colleges and graduate schools?
- And speaking of public affairs: We were thrilled to see Dan Mulhern, co-lead of Nutter’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice, featured in Jon Chesto’s must-read “Bold Types,” including the unique sketch that accompanies the lead item.
- Trusted watchdog: The Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation continues to be a leader in public policy research, and 2024 saw strong visibility for the Massachusetts Competitive Index showing us where we are leading and lagging among the 50 states and the importance of childcare for workers, among other hot topics.
- Easing debt loads: The Healey-Driscoll Administration launched phase two of the MA Repay program, offering $30,000 to $300,000 in student loan debt relief to behavioral and primary health care professionals in historically disadvantaged communities.
- Amplifying: We’ve appreciated our growing relationship with Amplify LatinX and their focus increasing business opportunities for Latinos in both The Boston Globe and on Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra.
- Powerhouse: If it were its own state, Boston’s Longwood Medical Area would rank in the top 10 states for National Institutes of Health research funding. The Longwood Collective showcased this regional powerhouse in a Boston Globe op-ed and a “Placemaking Playbook” for other medical/academic/cultural districts.
- Denterlein Studios: Our clients turn to video to recruit trainees (Massachusetts Dental Society campaign for dental assistants with “Be Part of the Team” and “Make People Smile” explaining the joys of dental assisting! Bonus points for you if you spot which Denterlein staffers’ teeth show up in these videos!
- Movies Part 2: Did you know The Museum of Science also make movies? The museum’s original documentary, The Heart of New England, showcases seven unique people-centric stories of hope and resilience in the region; the film earned great coverage got from WCVB and from locally born writer and actor Mindy Kaling.
- Wicked Smaht: GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. is home to brilliant engineers, scientists, and environmental professionals, led by CEO Patrick Sheehan, who was interviewed on Engineering News-Record’s must-listen “Critical Path” podcast. Multiple team members shared their insights on topics as diverse as geothermal energy and battery energy storage systems and more.
- The stories you DIDN’T read in 2024: Denterlein’s crisis communications experts led by President Diana C. Pisciotta and Senior Vice President Jill Reilly helped clients get through difficult situations without generating media coverage. As our founder often says: “Half my clients want me to get them in the paper, half my clients want me to keep them out!”
- Award-winners here at Denterlein: Vice President Mike Schiano honored with a NESHCo Lamplighter Award for all his work for the Massachusetts Dental Society. And Vice President Jovanny Rosado being named as one of Amplify LatinX’s “ALX100 Leaders.”
- A part of it all: Denterlein is committed in every way to making Greater Boston stronger, more welcoming, and more competitive. This includes Geri Denterlein’s service on the board of Boston Main Streets Foundation and on the search committee for CommonWealth Beacon’s new editor, Laura Colarusso; President Diana C. Pisciotta on the Boston Preservation Alliance, Senior VP Katherine Adam on the board of the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC), Senior VP Peter J. Howe as a Trustee of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation and VP of the New England-Canada Business Council, Senior VP Jill Reilly on the board of the Boston Boys & Girls Clubs’ YouthConnect connecting at-risk youth to social workers, and Senior Advisor Terence Burke on the board of advisors for the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and co-chair of the Library’s New Frontier Network. You also saw us presenting on PR strategies for nonprofits at Encore Boston Harbor’s third annual Nonprofit Leadership Retreat (Geri and Jovanny), career advancement at The New England Council’s “Rising Stars” program held at Nutter (Peter and VP Anusha Mookherjee), crisis communications tips for commercial real estate specialists at NAIOP (Diana), and moderating a discussion on Massachusetts’ opioid crisis for MASSter List (Peter).
- Out and About: Some highlight events this year included: the PR World Alliance global meeting in Sweden, the New England Council’s Washington Leaders Conference, the induction of Alison King and others to the New England Broadcasters Hall of Fame (Geri and Peter) … and following great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod with our friends at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy!
- Promoting the promoters: Congratulations to three Denterlein colleagues who got well-earned promotions in the past year: Jovanny Rosado to Vice President, Marcela Dwork to Account Director, and Jadzia Walker to Senior Account Executive. (And congrats to new team member Account Coordinator Catherine Mann, who is already delivering excellent results.)
